Buying Guide

Work through four questions in order and the right connector usually picks itself. First, how much current and voltage does the joint carry — that sets the minimum contact size and rules out the light-duty families straight away. Second, how many conductors, plus at least one spare pin, because adding a wire later means replacing the connector entirely. Third, where does it live: a connector on a machine that vibrates or a cable that gets yanked needs a locking coupling, not a friction fit, and anything exposed to dust or splashing needs an IP rating to match. Fourth, how does it mount — through a drilled panel hole, inline on the cable, or onto a board — since that decides the body style. Measure your panel cut-out before ordering, and remember most sets are sold as a male-and-female pair, so you need one set per break in the cable.
