DB-9 RS232

9-pin D-sub serial connectors — solder-cup male plugs and female sockets for RS-232 wiring, plus the two-piece backshell kit that finishes the cable end.

The DB-9 — properly a DE-9, but universally sold as DB-9 — is the 9-pin D-sub connector that carries RS-232 serial communication. Its D-shaped metal shell is asymmetric by design, so the plug physically cannot be inserted upside down, and a pair of 4-40 jack screws either side lock the joint closed against vibration and cable tugs. Imperial Electronic stocks the male plug, the female socket, and the backshell hood in Lahore.

All the connectors in this range use solder-cup termination rather than crimp or IDC, which means you make the cable up yourself to whatever pinout the job calls for. That is the whole reason to buy the parts loose instead of a ready-made lead: equipment-specific serial cables are rarely wired straight through, and a null-modem or custom-pinout lead can only be built from separate ends. Both genders share a nickel-plated steel shell, copper alloy contacts on a blue thermoplastic insulator, and a rating of 5A per contact at 250V AC.

Serial is far from dead in practice. RS-232 remains the control and programming interface on PLCs and CNC controllers, weighbridge and industrial scale heads, POS terminals and receipt printers, GPS and modem modules, and the console ports on managed switches, routers, and UPS units — a large installed base of working equipment across Pakistan that still needs these connectors to service.

Buying Guide

Get the gender right first, and check the equipment rather than guessing — the rule of thumb is that the device end is usually male and the cable end that plugs into it female, but adaptors and non-standard kit break that often enough to be worth a look before you order. Remember a working cable needs an end at each side, so a straight lead is one male and one female, while a null-modem cable between two device ports is two females. Then add a hood for every connector, not every cable: the backshell is what protects the solder cups from shorting and what takes the strain off the joints, and a hand-built DB-9 without one will eventually fail where the wires meet the pins. Finally, plan your pinout before soldering — RS-232 leads are frequently not wired pin-to-pin, and the three lines most jobs actually need are TX (pin 3), RX (pin 2), and ground (pin 5), with the handshake lines wired only if the equipment insists on them.
